Agriculture Field of Award

Virginia Cuevas

She is multi-awarded Professor Emeritus at the University of the Philippines Los Baños and Academician, National Academy of Science and Technology – DOST who advocates deploying science as a tool to help marginalized populations solve problems in their community. For example, she assisted the people of Mogpog, Marinduque—a mining damaged municipality, to increase yield of their crops and the Aetas in Kanawan, Morong, Bataan who are reforesting their denuded ancestral land using native trees seedlings. She continues her advocacy for sustainable agriculture through promotion of the Trichoderma technology she developed that eliminates the use of pesticides and lessens dependence on chemical fertilizers and yet produces high yield.
